An early essay on 'inspiration', or the arguments for the words of the Scriptures as 'god-breathed', or divinely imparted, by English Scholar and Dissenter Gilbert Wakefield (1756–1801), inscribed to 'The Lover of the Gospel, and the Friend of Mental Liberty'. Wakefield's successful career as a radical pamphleteer did not truly begin for another decade, but in his early essays and sermons the sparks of later compositions can be seen.
