Bristol.
J. M. Gutch, 1810.
First edition.
8vo.
[4], iv, [2], 253pp, [1]. With half-title and an engraved portrait frontispiece of the author after Marshall's famous frontispiece in Hesperides. Contemporary gilt-tooled calf, recently rebacked preserving contemporary backstrip, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces. Rubbed and marked, lower joint starting, corners exposed. Spotting and browning to frontispiece, otherwise internally clean and crisp.
The first edition of 284 selected poems from Robert Herrick's (1591-1674) Hesperides, with notes by physician John Nott (1751-1825). The first time many of these poems had been reprinted since 1648, Nott's edition contributed heavily to the restoration and rehabilitation of Herrick's reputation in the nineteenth century, in part due to his unstated corrections of the poems' 'indecencies'.
