Two volumes collecting thirteen eighteenth century devotional pamphlets regarding the
worship and doctrine of the churches of England and Scotland, the Bishops and clergy of Ireland, scripture-faith, and religious liberty. Two of the individual pamphlets bear the
ownership inscription of Scottish antiquary, bibliophile, and grand tourist, Walter
Bowman (1699-1782); the manuscript lists of contents are also in his hand.
Bowman, a friend of Horace Walpole, was a member of the Society of the Dilettanti, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (1735) and the Royal Society (1745). He made several tours of Europe, the first with Simon Harcourt, later the first Earl Harcourt, adding to his collections of antiquities, his library, and his manuscript notebooks, several of which are now at the National Library of Scotland.
