8vo. [3], xvi, 306pp. Without half-title. With a tipped-in errata slip, colour engraved frontispiece and 25 further colour engraved plates. Contemporary gilt-tooled half-vellum, contrasting black calf lettering-piece and gilt-tooled red morocco onlays to spine, marbled boards. Marbled endpapers and edges. Lightly rubbed and marked, with surface wear to boards, upper joint slightly starting at foot of spine, spine dulled. Light scattered spotting, heavier to initial leaves.
The sole edition of a literary encyclopaedia of trees, originally published anonymously, by Rebecca Hey (1797–1859), English botanical illustrator and poet. Furnished with paintings by the author, the volume combines botanical observations with selections of contemporary and classical literature to reinforce the importance of botany to the historical and cultural record.
