The second edition, printed in the same year as the first, of the first formal listing of the terms and prices applying to the purchase of infantry and cavalry commissions. The practice of purchasing commissions began during the reign of Charles II and continued until abolished in 1871, as a part of the Cardwell Reforms. The highest 'tariff' for a commission recorded here is that of a colonelcy in Lord Irwin's Regiment, for the staggering sum of £9,000.
