London. Printed for Henry Brome, 1681. First edition.
Quarto. [2], 37pp, [1]. Modern green cloth boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Lightly marked. Manuscript '32' to head of title. Leaves browned, spotting.
The first edition of a polemical pamphlet by the notorious Sir Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704), English courtier, pamphleteer, and press censor, in which he responds to 'libellous' accusations on his character - in particular, criticism and mockery of his response to the fabricated Popish Plot. Mocked, declared an 'attack-dog' for the Pope, and with effigies of himself being burned at the stake in the streets, in February 1681 L'Estrange returned to London to face a storm of abuse. His first response, ‘L'Estrange no Papist,’ (1681), asserted that a ‘whole kennel of libellers was now let loose upon him as if he were to be beaten to death by Pole-Cats'; this tract, published shortly afterwards, attempted a more comprehensive defence of his political and theological integrity.
