A book of the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University, Tennessee, an African-American a capella ensemble who performed to raise money in aid of the university, an institution formed after the Civil War to provide higher education to freed slaves. Included is a contemporary photograph of the group, who would introduce their audiences to slave songs and spirituals. Touring both America and Britain, the group reunited in 1878 after brief disbandment and are still performing today.
