The Abbotsford Club was founded in Edinburgh in 1833 by William Barclay Turnbull (1811-1863), and named in honour of Sir Walter Scott, resident of Abbotsford House. The remit of the society was to publish original works and reissues illustrative of history, literature, and antiquities. The club ceased activity in 1866 having published thirty-two quarto volumes. Notable members included antiquary and bibliophile Beriah Botfield (1807-1863), Literary scholar and librarian David Irving (1778- 1860), and literary editor and forger John Payne Collier (1789-1883).
