The manuscript minutes of the intermittent meetings of the Newport Literary Society, recorded in several hands, between 1883 and 1890.

The programme of the meetings, varied from lectures delivered by individual members to debates between members on such topics as the 'character of Shylock in the Merchant of Venice', 'has the Government policy in Ireland been worthy of support?', 'would Parliament be justified in opening museums and picture galleries on Sundays?', and 'Should women be admitted to the franchise?' - in this latter debate members were evenly divided, eight on each side of the argument, with the chairman's casting vote in favour of the negative. On occasion meetings were held jointly with other local societies, including the Lochee Association in nearby Dundee.
