8vo. xii, 151pp, [1]. With a list of subscribers. Original publisher's blind-stamped blue cloth, lettered in gilt to upper board. A trifle rubbed and marked. Ink shelf-mark to verso of title, scattered spotting.
The first edition, published by subscription, of a French language primer by Cheltenham based language teacher Sophie Tiesset, calculated to facilitate conversation through imitation only and 'without grammatical rules or exercises'. The list of subscribers is dominated by propertied society ladies, with the exception of Monsieur Froment of the French University at Sherborne, and Miss Kendall of the Ladies' Boarding School, Weymouth. A second edition appeared in 1854.
