[STEVENSON, Alan]. The british pharos; or a list of the lighthouses on the coasts of great britain and ireland, descriptive of the appearance of the lights at night. For the use of mariners.

Leith. Published and Sold by W. Reid & Son, 1831. Second edition.
8vo. xvi, 118pp. Original publisher's glazed cloth, printed paper lettering-piece to spine. Rubbed to extremities and bumped to corners, short splits and chips at head and foot of spine. Inscribed 'From the Commissioners of the Northern Lighthouses' to FFEP, and with printed note regarding the mooring of a 'Floating Light Vessel...off the North End of Haisborough Sand' pasted to FEP.
An excellent association copy of the second edition of Stevenson's rare list of British lighthouses with notes on their appearance at night, first published in 1828, presented by the Commissioners of the Northern Lighthouses to an unnamed recipient, and recently dispersed from the family library of the Stevenson family itself.

Slightly expanded from the first edition, and issued in an ever so slightly larger format, it features 13 further entries reflecting lighthouses or beacons newly constructed or commissioned between 1828 and 1831, including the temporary Belle Tout lighthouse and twelve further constructions, five of which in Ireland and seven in Stevenson's home nation of Scotland. Several of these new additions were constructed by the author's father, Robert Stevenson (Dunnet Head, Girdleness and Bara Head).

OCLC and COPAC locate copies at just five libraries in the UK (Bangor, BL, Edinburgh, NLS and NLW) and five elsewhere (Chicago, Harvard, NLI, Wisconsin and the US Navy Department).
