[MOURNING CARDS]. [An album of mourning cards].

[vs.]. [vs.], [1845-1916]
Oblong quarto. 117 mourning cards mounted on 28 heavyweight card leaves, the majority printed within black borders. Bound by W. & J, Milne of Edinburgh in contemporary red straight-grain morocco, gilt initials 'I. N. S. L.' to upper board, A.E.G. Lightly rubbed. Scattered spotting.
An extensive, rather macabre album of one hundred and eighteen, mourning cards, largely Victorian, both letterpress and manuscript, the collection spans 1845 to 1916.; the majority relating to the funerals of residents of Lancashire, Clitheroe in particular, many those of women and young children.

Notably, the collection includes a card announcing the funeral of Le Gendre Nicholas Starkie (1799-1865), of Huntroyde Hall, sometime Justice of the Peace for Lancashire and Yorkshire and prominent Freemason, being Provincial Grand Master for the Western Division of Lancashire.
