James Hogg (1770-1835), Scottish novelist, essayist and poet widely known as the Ettrick Shepherd, although interestingly he used the epithet 'The Mountain Bard' on the title page of most works subsequent to this. He was friend of Walter Scott, who prefaced this work as well as being it's dedicatee.
