The first part (of three) of the auction catalogue of the fine library of John Towneley (1731-1813), noted book collector, nephew and namesake of translator John Towneley (bap. 1697, d. 1782).

The library included specimens from the presses of Caxton, Pynson, and Wynkyn de Worde, as well as the 'Towneley Homer' (lot 884), an eleventh-century manuscript of the Iliad on vellum bought by Charles Burney for £620 and now in the British Library.
