The life and letters of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.
London.
Richard Bentley & Son, 1889.
First edition.
8vo.
In two volumes. xv, [1], 369pp, [3]; [3], vii, 325pp, [3]. Half-title to volume 2 only. With a leaf of publisher's advertisements to rear of both volumes. Brocade paper over original publisher's mustard cloth boards. Wear and tear to corners and edges, discolouration to spine. Light spotting to endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece to both volumes (volume 1, Mrs M.W. Shelley, volume 2, E. J. Trelawny.) Inked inscription to FFEP of volume 1: 'Maud, from S. B. In Memoriam. Bournemouth. Nov 94', accompanied by a tipped-in contemporary commercially produced photograph of Percy Shelley's grave on the following leaf.
A gifted copy of Florence Marshall's (1843-1922) biography of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1759-1797), mother of Mary Shelley and pioneering feminist. Writing under the pseudonym of Mrs Julian, Marshall's biography was the first full length work of its kind to be published on the late Wollstonecraft, and contains an extensive array of letters.
The accompanying inscription and photograph in this copy reveal that it was given to Maud Brooke by her father Stopford 'in memoriam' of a presumed trip to Bournemouth in 1894, perhaps where the image of Shelley's grave – at nearby Christchurch Priory - was acquired.
