The letters, initially published under the title Chinnapatra in 1912, the year prior to Tagore becoming the first non- European recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, span, as stated in his introductory remarks 'the most productive period of my literary life', and contain mediations on nature and poetry and reflections on the political situation in India at the close of the nineteenth century.
