The sole edition of the first appearance in print of the manuscript journal of cartographer James Rennell (1742- 1830), kept during his survey of the Ganges between 1764 and 1767, edited by Thomas Henry Digges La Touche (1855-1938), member of the Geological Survey of India and the Asiatic Society of Bengal.
Rennell, often referred to as the 'The father of Indian geography', served with both the East India Company's marine and military as surveyor and draughtsman, for whom he produced his major work A Bengal Atlas (1781) which remained the standard administrative map of Bengal for close to fifty years.
