The first edition of a comprehensive biography of influential Indian educationist and social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (1820-1891). A prolific writer, considered the father of Bengali prose, Vidyasagar published numerous influential works, among them Vetal pancavimsati (1847; 'Twenty-five Tales of a Goblin') and Sitar vanavas (1860; 'The Exile of Sita'). He did much to promote the education of women and was zealous in his opposition toward child marriage and polygamy, stances which brought him into opposition with orthodox Hindus. A second edition appeared in 1907.
