A coherent collection of fourteen papers, all apparently unrecorded, predominantly comprised of confidential reports relating to the administration of The Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Board.
The board was constituted in 1927, vested with responsibility of supervising and administering Hindu temples throughout India. Prior to this, the preservation of religious sites had not fallen under the remit of the British Government in India, and had subsequently deteriorated. The Board immediately authorised a committee to inspect temples of numerous provinces and provide assessments as to their condition alongside proposals for improvements; these reports, circulated to only to members of the Board (thus no doubt accounting for the lack of surviving copies), make up the majority of these two volumes.
