The second edition of 'Petra' by John William Burgon (1813-1888), eventual Dean of Chichester Cathedral. Various passages within depicting the city of Petra, Jordan, have oft been reprinted, despite Burgon never seeing the city himself. For this poem, Burgon received the Newdigate Prize, for poems by students at Oxford University, in 1845.
