The first edition of an authoritative account of the missionary work of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in India. The accounts reveal that East India Missionaries laboured under difficult circumstances, combatting not only the antipathy of the natives but also the obstruction of the Roman Catholics. These latter they accuse of adding to the number of their converts by improper means - such as offering baptism when the natives are likely to die, so that they may avoid funeral expenses'.
