[ROSS, William]. [Drop-head title:] Extract of a letter from a Gentleman at Fort St. George, dated 10th October, 1776.

[London]. [s.n.], [1777?]. First edition.
Quarto. 31pp, [1]. Uncut. Stitched, as issued. Initial two leaves torn in two, though complete. Scattered spotting.
The sole edition of a defence of George Pigot, first baron Pigot's (1719- 1777) controversial governance of Madras.

The controversy surrounding Pigot concerned the disputed territory of Tanjore, over which both Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, Nawab of the Carnatic, and Thuljaji Bhonsle claimed sovereignty in the mid 1770s. Pigot, as President, supported the claims of the latter. This decision provoked the Madras council into opposition, eventually resulting in Pigot's imprisonment at the behest of several leading members in August 1776; he died in March 1777, in confinement near Fort St. George, before the orders for his restoration (and shortly after, his recall) had arrived from London.

The pamphlet is appended with translations of letters written in September 1776 by the Rajah of Tanjore, to Mr. G. Stratton and others relating chiefly to Mr P. Benfield's claims upon the revenue of Tanjore.
