The great metropolis. Second series.
London.
Saunders and Otley, 1837.
First edition.
8vo.
In two volumes. vii, [1], 312; iv, 324pp, [4]. With two terminal leaves of publisher's advertisements to Vol. II. Original publisher's green cloth, printed paper lettering-pieces. A trifle rubbed and marked, spines dulled. Internally clean and crisp.
The first edition of newspaper editor James Grant's (1802-1879) catalogue of London, reviewed with aristocratic sharpness in William Maginn's Fraserian Papers (1837), which declared the 'unfortunate writer' a victim of immeasurable 'theatrical blunders'. The two volumes cover London's geography, literature, finances, nightlife, and judiciary system, recounted through a range of detailed anecdotes and observations.
