Letter to **** ******, on the rev. w. l. bowles' strictures on the life and writings of pope.
London.
John Murray, 1821.
Third edition.
8vo.
61, [1], 6pp, [2]. With four terminal leaves of publisher's advertisements. Uncut in modern brown cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. Blind-stamp of Nottingham Public Libraries to head of title page, scattered spotting.
The third edition of Byron's Letter to John Murray, itself a rebuking of William Lisle Bowles (1762-1850), poet and editor whose besmirching of Alexander Pope in 1816 had incensed not only Byron but several of his contemporaries. The Letter defends Pope's moral character with a fervour typical of Byron, but rather neglects staunch literary criticism in favour of this vicious polemic.
