A selection of Scottish ballads compiled by antiquarian and author John Pinkerton (1758-1826), with the first volume being originally published as Scottish Tragic Ballads in 1781. Pinkerton's erratic behaviour, verbal abuse towards his contemporaries, and support of German racial theory left him a much maligned figure both alive and in death.
