A moralistic tale for young children centred around Selima Stanly, the 'Juvenile Protectress', whose exploits in assisting the poor and downtrodden awaken 'the joy she felt at relieving the distress of a fellow creature". The author, promoting Christian charity, wishes that 'may all you, my young readers, feel the never fading delight of mitigating the sorrows of others'.
