INDEX OF VERNACULAR NAMES, WITH A JACOBITE BOOKPLATE
Nominum propriorum Virorum, Mulierum, Populorum, &c. quae in Viri Illustris jacobi augusti thuani Historiis leguntur index Cum vernacula singularum vocum Expositione.
Genevae, [i.e. Geneva].
Apud Petrum Aubertum, 1634.
Quarto.
[612]pp. Contemporary gilt-tooled calf. Rubbed, with loss at head of spine and bumping to corners; but nevertheless an attractive copy. With the bookplate of Sir James Gordon Bart. of Letterfoury to FEP, and of George Lockhart of Carnwath (upon which someone has inscribed 'Scarry a looked Heart' in an early hand) to verso of title. Pen trials to margin of second leaf; occasional wormtracks, marginal except to the first five signatures; without any loss of sense.
The uncommon separately published index of Latin proper names - taken from French historiographer, statesman, and bibliophile Jacques-Auguste de Thou's (1553-1617) Historiarum sui temporis (Paris, 1604-8) - compiled by French humanist scholar and librarian Jacques Dupuy (1591-1656), with added vernacular translations of names into the respective language of the individual.
Serving as curator of the French Royal library, Dupuy's own extensive library was bequeathed to the King, and later divided between the French national library and the Bibliotheque Mazerin.
The bookplate to the verso of the title of this copy is that of Jacobite politician George Lockhart (1681?-1731)
