[CHALLONER, Richard]. The Garden of the Soul; or manual of spiritual exercises and instructions, for christians who, living in the world, aspire to devotion..

London. Charles Dolman, 1845.
8vo. xii, 318pp, [3]. Contemporary burgundy velvet, with elaborate brass furniture to board corners, and central brass roundel to upper and lower board with armorial device. Wine-red moire silk endpapers, gauffered edges. Worn, with velvet lost to spine and upper board, exposing cloth beneath. Endpapers slightly soiled, initial leaves stained pink.
A nineteenth-century edition, extravagantly bound with brass furniture, of a popular prayer book for the laity first published in 1740 by Richard Challoner (1691-1781), then Vicar Apostolic of the London District. The devotional work remained popular until the mid-twentieth century, although Challoner's original text was altered so heavily in subsequent editions that little of the initial work remained.
