WOODLEY, Rev. George. A view of the present state of the scilly islands: exhibiting their Vast Importance to the British Empire..

London. F. C. and J. Rivington, 1822. First edition.
8vo. [1], xviii, [1], 344pp. With half-title and large folding map of the Scilly isles. Uncut in original boards, recently rebacked with a new spine label. Quite worn and marked, with significant bumping to edges and corners. Heavy spotting and a little staining to title and preface, then lighter spotting across remainder of text.
The first edition of a study on the Isles of Scilly by the Rev. George Woodley (bap. 1786, d. 1846), poet and clergyman. Addressed to the Venerable Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, the work comments extensively on both the geography and natural history of the archipelago, with a particular exploration of the 'fishery lately established', before exploring each individual island. Woodley comments in the preface that despite the volume's 'imperfections', he believes that 'if I have shewn that the Scilly Isles really are of great national importance...I hope I may venture to claim some share of indulgence and attention'.
