The fifth edition of a tract on apostolical preaching by John Bird Sumner (1780-1862), clergyman and future Archbishop of Canterbury. Sumner would be in and out of controversies throughout his career - his vote for Catholic emancipation would agitate the clergy in his diocese, whilst the Gorham case of 1847 would feature a threat of excommunication from Henry Phillpotts, Bishop of Exeter.
