D'ARCHENHOLZ, M. . A picture of England: containing a description of the laws, customs, and manners of England...Translated from the French.

Dublin. P. Byrne, 1791. Second edition.

The second edition of Prussian historian and officer Johann Wilhelm von Archenholz's (b.1741) reflections on travel through England, first published as England und Italien (Leipzig, 1785). The text first entered British consciousness in French translation shortly before the French Revolution, and appears here in its first English translation, A Picture of England. A later English translation, A View of the British Constitution (Edinburgh, 1794), would cement the text's place in popular writings of German Anglophilia.
