London. Printed for R. Harford, 1642. First edition.
Quarto. [40]pp. Nineteenth-century half-morocco, ruled and lettered in gilt, marbled paper boards. A trifle rubbed. Evidence of armorial bookplate removal to FEP, early ownership inscription 'Mr Joh: Robins' to blank verso of initial leaf, very occasional early manuscript corrections to text.
The first edition of army officer Sir Edward Harwood's (c. 1586-1632) martial treatise recommending appropriate defence policies for England against the threat of French invasion. Posthumously published from the original manuscript by Harwood's brother, a London merchant, the work is preceded by a panegyric memoir of Harwood supplied by vaunted Independent minister Hugh Peter (bap. 1598, d. 1660) who effusively praises his military prowess and admirable bravery.
