8vo. xiv, [10], 192pp. Contemporary gilt-ruled calf. Worn, with some loss to foot of spine, joints cracked, surface wear to boards and edges. Pastedowns sprung. Leaves lightly browned, light scattered spotting.
An eighteenth century translation of On The Sublime, a piece of literary criticism completed by an unknown author of Roman-era Greek origin known simply as Longinus in the first century AD. The treatise on aesthetics was translated and edited by English poet Leonard Welsted (bap. 1688 – 1747), branded one of Pope's 'dunces' after launching attacks on the Scribblerans in 1714.
