The first edition of a substantial prose work by English theologian and Platonist Henry More (1614-1687), in which he most concisely presents his idea of reconciling Christian Platonism with 17th-century science, expanded on further in his later Divine Dialogues (1668). More was well-known for his disputes with the philosophy of René Descartes, rejecting Cartesian dualism, objecting to the idea that animals were machines, and emphasising the necessity of immaterial principles in scientific thought,
