The anonymous author, identifying herself solely as 'A Lady', has been identified as a Mrs Mary J. Jourdan, of whom little is known. The volume is inscribed to Lady Peel, presumably Julia, Lady Peel (1795-1859), wife of British Prime Minister Robert Peel.
