The first edition of a lecture on 'gunnery' delivered at the Royal Society by its 20th President, Scottish physician Sir John Pringle, 1st Baronet (1707 – 1782). The country's most qualified military doctor, and the personal physician to King George III from 1774, the work of Pringle in establishing military hospitals as neutral, immune spaces for the sick and injured led to the foundation of the International Red Cross.
