The second edition, printed in the same year as the first, of Royal Navy officer and polar explorer Sherard Osborn (1822-1875) account of his voyage to Japan, in the company of Lord Elgin in order to conclude the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, which opened Japanese ports to British trade. Osborn provides valuable commentary on the culture and customs of the Tokugawa shogunate in its terminal years.
