Original publisher's brown cloth, decorated in gilt and blind. Lightly rubbed and marked, with chipping to head and foot of spine, corners a trifle bumped. Bookseller's ticket of J. & J. Vice of Nottingham to FEP, contemporary inked ownership inscription to FFEP, ink-stamp of Nottingham Public Libraries to verso of title.
The first edition of an affectionate memoir of British Army officer Robert Holden (1805-1872), of Nuttall Temple, Nottinghamshire, written by an author identified within solely as 'one who knew him well', since established as F. M. C. Whittaker. The prefatory memoir, by Anglican bishop John Charles Ryle (1816-1900), highlights Holden's philanthropic spirit, honourable action in the South Notts. Yeomanry Cavalry, and dedication to the Christian faith.
