xxxviii, 937pp. Title page in red and black. With a pasted-in photographic frontispiece, photographic illustration pasted to title, and 7 further photographic plates. Bound by Houghton and Gunn (stamp-signed to first blank fly-leaf) in contemporary dark green limp straight-grain morocco, lettered in gilt to spine and upper board, with the personal gilt message 'Lonsdale from Gracie Jan. 15 1890' to lower corner of upper board. A.E.R. Lightly rubbed and marked, with scratches to boards. Tear to gutter margin of FFEP, text-block partially detached from spine? Light spotting to initial leaves.
A collect of hymns composed by organist William Henry Monk (1823 – 1889), best known as the composer of 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' and 'Eventide', the hymn tune used for 'Abide With Me'.
Provenance: from the library at Lowther Castle, being the copy of Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944), gifted to him by his wife, Lady Grace Cecilie Gordon, for whom it was specially bound.
