THE KING'S OFFICE HOLDERS
The Establish'd State Of the publick offices Under his majesty King george II. Containing True and exact Lists of the lords of his Majesty's Privy-Council...
London.
Printed for Weaver Bickerton, 1728.
8vo.
[2], 109pp, [1]. Uncut. Original publisher's powder blue wrappers. Extremities a trifle marked, date in manuscript to upper wrapper. Early manuscript page references to browned title page.
An entirely unsophisticated copy, uncut and in original wrappers, with manuscript page references added in an early hand, of a rare, comprehensive list of the holders of royal, military, ceremonial and civic office in the opening years of the reign of King George II.
Opening with a list of the Privy Council, featuring the 'Treasurer of the Exchequer' (i.e. Prime Minister) Robert Walpole, the work - which appears to have troubled the press for just this single year - continues with lists of the Lords (spiritual and temporal), the House of Commons, Lords Lieutenants, members of the Royal Household, commissioners of customs (including 'Principal Offices of the Wine Licences), members of the Royal Society (with the president, Hans Sloane) and plenty more besides.
ESTC records copies at just two locations in the British Isles (Middle Temple and Oxford), and a further four in North America (Huntington, Illinois, Indiana, and Yale).
