The sole edition of John Jackson's (d. 1807) account of his monumental overland journey from Bombay en route to Basrah and thence to central Europe. Jackson departed on 4th May 1797 and proceeded via the Euphrates and Tigris to Baghdad, and then on through Kurdistan, Anatolia, Bulgaria, Wallachia, and Transylvania. He reached Hamburg on 28th October demonstrating the efficacy of his route as practicable throughout the year, as opposed to the potentially perilous voyage by ship - though did concede that the passage was not to be undertaken lightly, especially by those less than physically capable. Jackson's daily narrative is invaluable for its documentation of local customs and habits of dress, which he adopted freely in order to travel inconspicuously.
