The first edition, handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf, of the sole collection of verse published by the author, Scottish labouring poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810), within his lifetime. Provincially published in Paisley, Tannahill's hometown, the collection also includes a wide selection of Scots dialect songs and ballads, reflecting the poet's association with Scottish Romantic composers such as Robert Archibald Smith (1780-1829); his work was also much indebted to Scotland's Bard, and indeed he founded Paisley's Burns Club. Tannahill's death, mistakenly ruled a suicide, marred his reputation for several years; nevertheless, several of his folk-tunes and songs surged in popularity throughout the twentieth century, forming the basis for ballads as celebrated as Australia's "unofficial national anthem", 'Waltzing Matilda', and Canadian folk song 'Farewell to Nova Scotia'.
