iv, viii, 46pp, 74pp,*74-*75, 75-112pp. With an additional title page, engraved frontispiece, seven large folding engravings, and six further engraved plates, depicting the exterior, interior, and architectural detail of the chapel. Loosely inserted ALS by the Warden of the Chapel, dated 1926. Later half-calf, ruled in gilt and blind, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, marbled boards. Lightly rubbed and marked, slight surface loss to joints and edges. Leaves lightly browned, light scattered spotting.
The first edition, published anonymously, and copiously illustrated, of French-English antiquary, librarian, and archivist Andrew Coltée Ducarel's (1713 – 1785) in-depth historical study of the medieval church and monastic hospital St Katharine's by the Tower, London. The 'commissary or official' of the church, Ducarel compiled this volume for the Society of Antiquaries of London, of which he was an elected fellow. The study serves as Volume 5 of publisher John Nichols' 'Bibliotheca Topographica Britannica', a series of works printed for the society covering various historic landmarks across the United Kingdom.
