CORY, William Johnson . Ionica.

London. Smith, Elder and Co., 1858. First edition.
8vo. iv, 116pp. Original publisher's blind-stamped green cloth, tooled and lettered in gilt to spine. Lightly rubbed and marked, spine sunned. Some ink-scuffing to FEP.
The first edition of the primary poetical work of controversial Etonian schoolmaster William Johnson Cory (1823-1892), known for his English Heraclitus, and famously dismissed from his post, under circumstances still ambiguous today, for allegedly motivating a culture of intimacy between the students. Despite the implications of said scandal, headmaster James Hornby described the dismissal as being devoid of 'immorality in the ordinary sense of the word', leading to modern speculation that it was in fact Cory's belief in liberal reform which prompted such treatment.
