Quarto. Uncut in contemporary half-calf, marbled boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. Lightly rubbed. Later bookplate of John Carter and recent bookplate of Eric Gerald Stanley to FEP. Presentation copies, inked inscription in Carter's hand to head of title of first mentioned work: 'Given to me by Samuel Pegge Esqr. / Scotland Yard, Whitehall. Carter's ownership inscription to title of second bound work, with manuscript note 'Given to me by the Author' to verso.
The sole editions of two works of ecclesiastical biography by Church of England clergyman and antiquary Samuel Pegge (1704-1796); the first concerning Roger de Weseham (d. 1257), Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield and protégé of the subject of the second work, scientist, theologian, and Bishop of Lincoln, Robert Grosseteste (c. 1170-1253).

John Carter (1748-1817), draughtsman to the Society of Antiquaries, champion of the Gothic Revival, and prolific contributor to the Gentleman's Magazine (amounting to some 380 articles within a period of approximately twenty years).

Eric Gerald Stanley (1923-2018), scholar of Old English literature, Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford.
