The first illustrated edition of George Du Maurier's (1834-1896) second novel, first published in three volumes in 1894. The immensely popular work gave two expressions to the English language, the 'Trilby hat', and, after the character of the evil mesmerist, 'Svengali' as the descriptor of anyone who manipulates another person in a sinister fashion.
