A rare survival of an early (if not the first) abridged edition, edited by journalist William Thomas Stead (1849-1912), of a translation of Leo Tolstoy's (1828-1910) Sevastopol Sketches, three short stories first published in 1855 as a record of his experiences during the siege of the city during the Crimean War that would form the foundation of his magnum opus, War and Peace (1865-67); number 43 in the "Review of Review's" Masterpiece Library, Penny Popular Novels series.
