Indulgence: A Tale for Youth.
Glasgow.
Printed for Richard Griffin & Co., 1826.
First edition.
12mo.
iv, 184, 4pp. With an engraved frontispiece and two final leaves of publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's green printed paper boards, recently expertly rebacked. Inked gift inscription to FFEP, lightly spotted.
A rare survival of the sole edition of an anonymous juvenile conduct of life tale promoting Christian morality and discipline. The prose is unremarkable, and on the whole a poor imitation of contemporary publications of this type, nevertheless despite, or perhaps because of this, the publisher’s introductory remarks are effusive in their praise: ‘In the following little piece, the author has endeavoured to point out the pernicious consequences of improper indulgence; as this is the error most likely to mingle with the affection which actuates the breast of a Parent, its baneful effects cannot be too cautiously guarded against’.
