A curious advice book for Victorian would-be entrepreneurs, which appears to consist of sample leaves from a larger work (and indeed differs in contents from another copy which we have previously handled). Composed and printed by the publisher Everett May, it features a wealth of supposedly profitable suggestions. Potential businesses range from ink- making to french polishing, manufacturing sweets and artificial flowers, and profitable 'female businesses' (including the production of furs, life belts and herb growing). Perhaps most interestingly, this rare insight into the Victorian world and self-help genre notably devotes an entire page to explaining how to take portrait photographs; but is cut off half way - presumably completed in the whole '84 sheets of different Plans of Employing Leisure Time' advertised within this work.
