MATHANASIUS, Chrisostome [i.e. SAINT-HYACINTHE, Thémiseul de]. Le chef-d'oeuvre d'un inconnu, poëme...

A Londres [i.e. London]. [s.n.], 1758.
12mo. In two volumes. lx, 243, [1]; [8], 245-502pp. Contemporary gilt-tooled cat's paw calf, contrasting red and green morocco lettering-pieces, marbled edges. Rubbed, chipping to lettering-pieces and to spines at head and foot. Marbled endpapers, recent bookplates of John Fowles to verso of both FFEPs, ver occasional spotting.
The first published work of French satirist Thémiseul de Saint-Hyacinthe (1684-1746). Initially issued anonymous in 1714, this scathing satire lampooning annotators and commentators of scholarly works, rightly established his reputation as a man of wit.

John Fowles (1926-2005), English novelist, whose notable works include The Magus (1965) and The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969).
